You are in a European country and you miss some traditional food of your native place. One day you walk into a restaurant and read that there is a familiar dish on the menu and you order it. When it is served you are amazed since it has a very enjoyable taste. It is Western food but it has some mixed Asian flavors that really please your taste.

Many restaurants in Saigon prepare European dishes with an Asian taste that please not only Vietnamese but also Westerners and many Japanese and Korean diners as well. One such dish is the grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon. First, the chef marinates the shelled fresh shrimp with traditional Vietnamese spices like black pepper, garlic and rice alcohol and wraps each piece of shrimp in a small slice of bacon.

Included in the wrapped portion are pickled scallion heads or other pickles (carrot or turnip). This addition fortifies the nutritional value of the food but lessens the fat and cholesterol and makes the dish look more attractive. The chef then laces the bacon roll with a leaf of green onion and grills it over fire.
