Located right on the corner of Le Thanh Ton and Hai Ba Trung, Nam Phan attracts attention due to its unique architecture. Set in a courtyard with green ivory bamboo and potted plants shading the yard and a small moat like water feature surrounding the white French villa, it certainly stands out from other restaurants.
The inside of the two story villa is formal with opulent furnishings in keeping with the designs of the owner of the restaurant, Hoang Khai of Khaisilk. Framed Champa-era antique coins are displayed on the walls and stairway, demonstrating a keen awareness of the history of Vietnam. The name Nam Phan dates back from when King Le Thanh Ton defeated the Champa army in the 15th century, dividing Vietnam into three states: Champa, Hoa Anh and Nam Phan.
It is a noble name for a fine restaurant serving traditional Vietnamese cuisine in a cosy and luxurious ambience. You can choose classical Vietnamese dishes from a wide menu as well as ten special grilled dishes from the 'Saigon Grill'.
Although Khai's background is in his family silk business, his foray into restaurants looks to be extremely successful, offering unique settings and excellent service. Aside from Nam Phan, Au Manoir De Khai and Nam Kha, he plans to open two other restaurants, Ming and Cham Charm in 2006.
