If you’re in the mood for Vietnamese food, the strip of Ngo Van Nam Street from roughly Ton Duc Thang along to Mandarin Restaurant is probably a wise choice. Mandarin Restaurant is paradise for all lovers of true Vietnamese food. A superb selection of fine, authentic cuisine is served in comfortable surroundings, built to reflect a Vietnamese imperial palace.

Mandarin is split over three levels, each planned with meticulous attention to detail. The bar is downstairs and most guests take a moment to have a drink here. On the highest level, there are 2 private rooms. These have a more straight forward atmosphere to them, ideal for lunches or more formal occasions.

In such elegant surroundings,. it would not do to forget the music. A cello, violin and piano are on hand for the nightly live performances which complete the elegant, turn-of-the-century atmosphere.

Vietnamese restaurants tend to eschew fancy decor. The earthy interiors and airy atmosphere of Mandarin are simple yet welcoming. That being said, it’s the food that counts and the simple yet tasty food is just what you're looking for. The staffs are professional and attentive but don't hover, and are ready to make helpful suggestions and explanations. Ask about their daily specials and set menus. I started my meal with Mekong Delta appetizer platter, thinking that it would be a good opportunity to try something that shows up less frequently on Vietnamese menus. I had a goi hoa nang (sunflower salad) served with an exotic creation of white mushroom, pork and shrimp. For a memorable meal, don't miss the famed Mandarin duck done in a sweet "Mandarin style." For those who dread oily dishes, the sauteed lobster 'tropical' style is light and melts in your mouth: it's as good as it sounds! A fine selection of French wines complement the well prepared, excellently presented fare.

Happy Vietnamese New Year! At Mandarin, you can celebrate the Year of the Pig in grand style. Visit Mandarin and see the spectacle of bright decorations and costumes. A quiet, elegant place, the Mandarin Restaurant is suitable for groups of all sizes on both leisure and business visits
